MADRID, Spain: Two Spanish children were among four people apparently kidnapped in Venezuela, officials said Tuesday.
The abduction is alleged to have occurred Sunday in Tachira state near the border with Colombia.
The Spanish children have been identified as Javier Gabir, 10, and Alberto Luis Parra Barreto, 12, from the town of Torrent in the Valencia region. They were in Venezuela on vacation with their uncle, David Barreto, and his 10-year-old son — both Venezuelans — when all four were apparently abducted.
Torrent town councilor Santiago Miquel said he had learned of the incident through local police.
Gustavo Pena, a senior Venezuelan police official, told Spain's Cadena Ser radio station that Barreto's car was found on a road that leads to the border with Colombia and that a police unit specializing in kidnappings is in the area investigating.
On its web page, the Spanish foreign ministry warns about traveling in Venezuela, including the area where the four were apparently abducted.
The page warns Spaniards to be "extremely cautious in the whole country, particularly in Caracas and other capitals," but also in regions that border Colombia.
